Machame route

Machame route - Kilimanjaro - 6 days

Machame route is probably the most complete trail taking you to Kilimanjaro summit – it is used uphill, and is combined with Mewka route for the descent which makes for a circle shaped itinerary.  The accommodation is in tents that are carried by porters. It is considered one of the most beautiful routes, so every year the number of people using it increases. The tough challenge of this route has made Machame worthy of the nickname ‘Whiskey Route’. This trail can be completed in six days. Its key for success is its topography, which allows hikers to climb to new heights during the day and to camp at lower levels at night, helping to better acclimatize. On this route there are two highlights that are physically demanding, the Shira Ridge and Barranco Wall.
  • Day 1: Moshi – Machame Gate (1.790m) – Machame Camp (3.010m)
  • Day 2: Machame Camp – New Shira Camp (3.845m)
  • Day 3: New Shira Camp – Lava Tower Hut (4.630m) – Barranco Camp (3.960m)
  • Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp (4.640m)
  • Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5.895m) – Mweka Camp (3.080m)
  • Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1.630m) – Moshi

  • When to go: The best time to climb Kilimanjaro from the climatological point of view is during the warmest and driest months (January, February and September). June, July and August are also good months, although the weather may be more variable. On the other hand, one must bear in mind that it is at this time is when we find more mountaineers. Machame usually presents an intermediate influx situation, specifically during those periods of higher attendance.
  • Climate: One of the main reasons for not successfully completing the ascent of Kilimanjaro is the so-called "altitude sickness" that may occur in some people when climbing heights 3,500m above sea level, without allowing time to your body to adapt. To prevent the possible effects of altitude, we recommend that hikers extend their trip by an extra day. This acclimatization day is invested in taking several walks up and down, thereby accustoming the body to height. Another possibility for a good acclimatization is to do the Mont Meru climb (4,566m) before climbing Kilimanjaro.
  • Luggage: It should be noted that porters carry 15 Kg at the most. In case of excess baggage, another porter must be hired, which means an extra cost for the client. This usually happens on very special cases, the extra baggage not necessary for the ascension can be left in the hotel. List of recommended materials to be necessary to be taken on the ascent.
